GTA 5 peyote plants: where to find all 27 and how to turn into Bigfoot

Updated: 06.11.2026 Author: Alex Rayne
Deer in a forest at sunset in GTA 5 Enhanced

All 27 peyote plants in GTA 5 with areas and landmarks. Which animals you can become, which versions have peyote, how to get Cryptozoologist, where to find the golden peyote and turn into Sasquatch.

In short
  • GTA 5 story mode has 27 peyote plants (Peyote Plants): 15 on land, 6 high up and 6 underwater.
  • Eating a peyote turns your character into a random animal: a dog, a bird, a fish, a cat, a deer or even a shark.
  • Peyote is in the updated version: on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. PS3 and Xbox 360 don't have it.
  • You don't need peyote for 100%. Eating 21 plants on land and high up earns the Cryptozoologist achievement.
  • After all 27, 7 golden peyotes appear. They turn you into Sasquatch (Bigfoot) and lead to a fight with Beast.

Which versions have peyote

Peyote wasn't in the original GTA 5 on PS3 and Xbox 360. It came with the updated version: on PS4 and Xbox One from November 18, 2014, and on PC from April 14, 2015. That PC version is now called GTAV Legacy.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have peyote too. We found no separate confirmation for PC Enhanced (released in March 2025) in our sources, so we don't claim it. The GTA 5 platforms page explains the differences between versions.

No guide says after which story mission peyote becomes available.

What happens when you eat peyote

Walk up to the plant and press right on the D-pad. Your character breaks off a piece, passes out and "wakes up" as an animal.

  • The animal is random. You can't choose it. Near the plant you can hear the sound of the animal it will turn you into.
  • The type depends on the location. A peyote on land gives a land animal, high up a bird, underwater a sea creature.
  • Limits. As an animal you can't pick up items, weapons, money or briefcases. Pedestrians react to you as they would to the normal protagonist, and the police can give you a wanted level.
  • End of the "trip". It ends when the animal dies, when a land animal goes into the water, or when you hold right on the D-pad.
  • Each plant works once. Peyotes only respawn after you have eaten all 27.

Which animals you can become

There are 27 regular animals, one per plant. Names are given as they appear in the game.

Dogs7Border Collie, Husky, Labrador Retriever, Poodle, Pug, Rottweiler, West Highland Terrier

Numbering follows GTA Wiki. Other guides, such as GamesRadar, number the same spots differently, so check by area and landmark. The general GTA 5 map will help you find the area.

The Cryptozoologist achievement

Cryptozoologist is awarded for unlocking all the animals. To get it, you need to eat 21 peyotes: 15 on land and 6 high up. The six underwater ones don't count toward the achievement.

The achievement was added in the Freemode Events update on September 15, 2015. At the same time, the land animals and birds you have played as become Director Mode actors. Sea creatures don't get added. The other rewards are on the GTA 5 achievements page.

Golden peyote and Sasquatch

After all 27 regular plants, you can hunt for 7 golden peyotes (Golden Peyote), one for each day of the week. Each one turns your character into Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot. Unlike the other animals, he can drive vehicles and pick up weapons.

Guides disagree on the conditions.

  • All sources agree: first you have to eat the 27 regular peyotes.
  • Most guides also require 100% and the completed mission The Last One (it only unlocks at 100%). Early reports from 2015–2016 said finishing the story was enough.
  • In-game time: 5:30–8:00. One guide says until 8:30.
  • Weather: fog or snow. Early articles specified fog on PC and snow on consoles.
  • The order is strict: Sunday to Saturday by the in-game calendar.
DayAreaLandmark
SundayChiliad Mountain State WildernessHiking trail about 300 m east of the coastal highway bridge over Cassidy Creek
MondayRaton CanyonSlope below the bend in the road above Cassidy Creek
TuesdayRaton CanyonSlope between the road and the river
Wednesday*Mount ChiliadSmall round peninsula by the northwest bay of the Alamo Sea
ThursdayAlamo SeaHeadland on the north shore of the Alamo Sea
Friday*Mount ChiliadSlope above the road along the north shore of the Alamo Sea
SaturdayGrapeseedWooded slope northwest of Grapeseed

* For Wednesday and Friday, GTA Wiki lists the area as Mount Chiliad, while another guide describes spots on the Alamo Sea shore. They may be the same points at the foot of Chiliad, but we couldn't verify this.

After the Saturday peyote, growl (the horn button), follow the howling and the trail of bodies. Beast appears at Thomson Scrapyard. Beat him in a fight, and Sasquatch and Beast unlock in Director Mode. The lists show no separate achievement for the golden peyote.

Players found one golden peyote in September 2015, but the full chain of 7 plants and Beast was only solved in June 2016.

GTA Online has its own seasonal set of peyotes (since 2019). It doesn't count toward story mode rewards.

Tips

  • Save before you eat. An eaten plant disappears until you have eaten all 27. GamesRadar and GTA Boom recommend saving beforehand so you can repeat the transformation if you want.
  • If you only want the achievement, skip the underwater ones. 21 plants are enough for Cryptozoologist. You only need the underwater ones for the golden peyote.
  • Take a helicopter for the high spots. Without one you can't reach #8, 19 and 24, and #4 is much easier by helicopter. To get to the island at #21 you'll need a boat. See the GTA 5 vehicles section for where to get them.
  • Deep spots need scuba gear. This applies especially to #2 by the sunken FlyUS plane and #13 near Humane Labs. For spots like these, GamesRadar suggests taking the submarine from Sonar Collections Dock, getting out on site and searching with scuba gear.
  • Combine routes. In Blaine County, spaceship parts and letter scraps are close by, and you can do stunt jumps along the way.
