In short
  • GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is a set of remasters of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas by Grove Street Games, built on Unreal Engine 4.
  • It launched on November 11, 2021 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and PC; on Steam on January 19, 2023; on iOS and Android on December 14, 2023.

  • The 2021 launch was marred by bugs and Rockstar apologized; updates from 2021 to 2024 fixed the worst of it.

What's in the trilogy

Three games from one universe, each with its own lead and city:

  • GTA III (2001): silent Claude, betrayed during a robbery, looks for revenge in Liberty City, a city modeled on New York. More on the GTA 3 page.
  • GTA Vice City (2002): in 1986, mobster Tommy Vercetti builds his own empire in Vice City, modeled on Miami.
  • GTA San Andreas (2004): in 1992, Carl "CJ" Johnson comes home after his mother's death; the state has three cities, Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas.

The stories, missions and maps come from the originals. The remaster was developed by Grove Street Games (formerly War Drum Studios, who made the mobile ports of these games) and published by Rockstar Games. It was announced on October 8, 2021, the month of GTA III's 20th anniversary.

Definitive Edition vs the originals: what changed

The remaster runs on Unreal Engine 4 instead of RenderWare. According to Rockstar's announcement, as reported by Game Informer and Push Square, the controls were brought closer to GTA V, with better aiming and weapon and radio wheels; it adds high-resolution textures, new lighting, a longer draw distance, map waypoints and mission restarts. According to Wikipedia, the Switch version adds gyro aiming and touchscreen support.

Some content was removed. Rockstar confirmed the music matches the 2014 re-releases, meaning more than 30 songs are missing from Vice City and San Andreas combined. Some cheats were dropped because, Rockstar said, they "didn't play well" in Unreal Engine. San Andreas lost its two-player co-op. And the originals were pulled from digital stores on October 13, 2021, which drew criticism even before release.

What critics panned at the 2021 launch

  • PC launch. The Rockstar Games Launcher was down for about 28 hours, and the PC version was unavailable for roughly three days.
  • Scores. According to Metacritic, reviews were "mixed or average" on PS5 and Xbox Series and "generally unfavorable" on Switch and PC; on OpenCritic, 12% of critics recommended it. Players review-bombed it on Metacritic.
  • Looks. The Guardian said the rain effects were so ugly they obscured the view; Hardcore Gamer, NME and Polygon criticized the new character models, and IGN wrote that the longer draw distance in San Andreas shattered the sense of scale.
  • Stability. Reviewers reported crashes and frame rate drops; the Switch version took the most heat (Nintendo Life).

Critics did praise the lighting, mission checkpoints, weapon wheel and navigation. A week after launch, Rockstar admitted the games "did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality" and promised fixes.

Updates followed: the first major patch on November 20, 2021, ground fog for San Andreas on November 30, more than 100 fixes in February 2022. In November 2024 an update added a lighting option matching the originals, shooting on the run in GTA III and Vice City, and mobile fixes. The worst launch bugs are gone, but the character models are the same.

Languages and PC requirements

Voice acting in all three games is English only. On PC, subtitles and menus are also available in French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional).

PC requirements: 64-bit Windows 10, Core i5-6600K or FX-6300, 8 GB of memory and a GeForce GTX 760; GTA III takes 5 GB of disk space, Vice City 10 GB and San Andreas 19 GB.

Cheats in the Definitive Edition

The original cheats mostly work in the trilogy: on PC you type the code as a word during play, on consoles you enter a button combination, and on mobile you use the Accessibility menu. Some codes were removed and a few were added; in the Definitive Edition cheats disable achievements and trophies, so save to a separate slot first.
