Map: where all 50 letter scraps are
The numbers on the maps match the tables below. The dots are placed by in-game coordinates, so the distances between them are true to the game. The first map covers Los Santos and the south, the second Blaine County and the north.
All 50 letter scraps: Los Santos
Numbering follows GTA Wiki, from south to north. Other guides number the spots their own way, so numbers from different lists don't match. Where guides name an area differently, the alternative is given in brackets.

What you will need
- A helicopter or a parachute. #2, 31 and 34. You can reach #39 by helicopter or with skilled motorcycle riding.
- Climbing. #4, 10, 20, 26 and 35: containers, a crane, rooftops and the Vinewood sign.
- No diving required. Only #32 in the Coveted Cove cave means swimming in from the sea, which is easiest on a jet ski.
According to PowerPyx, you can take a helicopter from the helipad of Central Los Santos Medical Center or the roof of the Davis Sheriff's Station. If none is there, go down to the street and back up, or save a short distance away and reload right away. Other vehicles are in the GTA 5 vehicles section, and the areas are on the GTA 5 map.
The Leonora Johnson mystery
Leonora Johnson is an actress who was brutally murdered in 1975. Her body was found near Land Act Dam in January 1975 after an anonymous call to the LSPD. The case was never solved. The game even has a website, whokilledleonorajohnson.com.
The scraps are pieces of a confession letter. The killer addressed it to producer David Richards of the Richards Majestic film studio. Once you collect all 50, you can read the full letter: it runs to 4 pages.
"A Starlet in Vinewood": the end of the investigation
Spoiler warning: the killer's name follows.
The letter exposes director Peter Dreyfuss. After 50 scraps, a green "?" marker appears in Vinewood Hills. This is the Strangers and Freaks mission "A Starlet in Vinewood", and only Franklin can play it.
Franklin goes to Dreyfuss's house: he is meditating or doing yoga by the pool. GTA Boom suggests shooting out his car's tyres before you talk to him, so he has to run on foot. After the cutscene Dreyfuss runs away. Then it is up to you: kill him or let him go.
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Kill Dreyfuss | The "Cut!" objective for the gold medal is completed. According to PowerPyx and GTA Boom, killing him is what unlocks the trophy |
| Let him go | The "Cut!" objective is not completed, no gold medal. Sources disagree on whether the trophy still unlocks |
Dreyfuss's death is later reported by Weazel News, the Daily Globe newspaper and Bleeter users, who say the director died "at the hands of a vigilante".
The other missions in this line are on the Strangers and Freaks page.
Trophy and 100%
The "A Mystery, Solved" trophy (Bronze) has the in-game description "Solve the mystery of Leonora Johnson". The 50 scraps alone are not enough: you also have to complete "A Starlet in Vinewood". Sources disagree on whether sparing Dreyfuss still gives the trophy. PowerPyx says outright that you must kill him, GTA Boom says killing him completes the mystery, GTABoss recommends killing him "to be safe", and GTA Wiki ties the trophy simply to finishing the mission. So to avoid the risk, kill him. Neither the scraps nor the mission give you money or a vehicle. The other trophies are in the list of GTA 5 achievements.
"A Starlet in Vinewood" is part of Franklin's Strangers and Freaks, which are required for 100% completion of GTA 5. Without all the scraps the mission won't unlock.
Tips to collect the scraps faster
- The crane at #10. PowerPyx recommends starting the climb from the north side of the Mile High Club construction site, taking the ladders section by section, and carrying a parachute for the way down.
- Tunnel #5 and trains. According to PowerPyx, trains in this tunnel run on the left track, warning lights come on before they arrive, and two trains never come at once, so there is always a safe side.
- Combine with other collections. #12 is by a bridge you know from the Under the Bridge collection. The helicopter for #2, 31 and 34 also comes in handy for knife flights and for finding spaceship parts.
All the game's collections are gathered in the GTA 5 collectibles section.
