What the game is about
GTA San Andreas is a Grand Theft Auto game from Rockstar North. It is the early '90s: Carl "CJ" Johnson returns to Los Santos after five years away because his mother has been murdered. The Grove Street Families gang is falling apart, and two corrupt cops immediately frame CJ for a killing. What follows is a trip across the entire state to save his family and win back control of the neighborhood.
The map covers three cities, Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, plus the countryside and desert in between. Rockstar's description of the mobile version promises more than 70 hours of play. GTABase counts exactly 100 story missions; the full list is on the San Andreas missions page.
San Andreas brought things to the series that later became standard: the hero's physical shape (fat, muscle, stamina), driving and shooting skills, gang wars over territory, and swimming. The same fictional state later became the setting of GTA 5, but that is a different game with a new map.

The original GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas were pulled from console and PC digital stores on October 13, 2021, ahead of the remaster. Rockstar later gave owners of the PC Definitive Edition the originals through its launcher, but that bonus only applied to purchases made before June 30, 2022.

On PC and consoles, San Andreas – The Definitive Edition is not sold on its own: every store page leads to the GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundle, which also includes GTA III and Vice City. On mobile you can buy the game by itself.

Sites offering a "free GTA San Andreas download" or a "full version APK" have no right to distribute it. Such files often carry malware, and the legal mobile version costs $6.99.

The original's requirements come from its Steam page (the game itself is no longer sold there), the Definitive Edition's from the San Andreas DE page on Steam. The original will run on practically any modern laptop; the Unreal Engine remaster needs a proper gaming graphics card.
Languages: voice acting and subtitles
Voice acting in every version is English only, so English speakers get the game exactly as it was recorded. The PC Definitive Edition has subtitles and menus in several more languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish (for Spain and Latin America), Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Fan translations exist for other languages, but Rockstar did not make or support them, so treat them with the same caution as mods.
Online, SA-MP and mods
San Andreas has no official online mode: it is a single-player game. Searches for "GTA San Andreas online" usually lead to fan multiplayer mods for the old PC version: SA-MP, its successor open.mp, and MTA:SA. Rockstar did not make them. In its Mod Guidelines (updated September 10, 2026) Rockstar says multiplayer mods are allowed only through the official licensed Creator Platform.

GTA San Andreas cheats
San Andreas has about a hundred cheats. On PC you simply type them on the keyboard during play: the best known, HESOYAM, gives health, armor and $250,000. On consoles you enter a button combo, and in the mobile Definitive Edition you use the Accessibility menu.
