GTA 5 speaks English: game languages and how to change them

GTA 5 languages explained: the voice acting is English only, with subtitles in a dozen more languages. Which languages the game supports on PC and consoles, how to change the language on PS5, Xbox and PC launchers, and what to know about fan translations.

Коротко
  • GTA 5 was recorded in English: English speakers get the voice acting, subtitles and menus exactly as Rockstar made them.
  • The voice acting is English only, on every platform.
  • On PC, subtitles are available in English, Polish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese, among others.
  • On consoles the game language follows the system language; on PC you change it in Rockstar Games Launcher or in the store's launcher.
  • Unofficial fan translations exist as community projects, but Rockstar does not support them, and installing them is at your own risk.

What language GTA 5 is in

GTA 5 is an English-language game first. We checked the language lists on Steam and PlayStation Store on October 31, 2026: English is there for voice, subtitles and menus on PC (Legacy and Enhanced), PS4, PS5 and Xbox. For an English-speaking player there is nothing to switch: the game starts in the language it was written and recorded in.

The voice acting is English only on every platform, with no dubbed versions. This applies to both Story Mode and GTA Online. Other languages get subtitles and an interface, not voices.

Which languages GTA 5 has

PlatformSubtitle and interface languages
PC (Steam, Epic, Rockstar)English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional and others
PS5English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Spanish (Mexico), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and others
PS4the set depends on the store region; on the Ukrainian PS Store page it is English, German, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal), French, Spanish, Spanish (Mexico), Italian and others
Xbox Series X|S14 languages (Microsoft does not list them on the game's page)

If you play with friends or family who prefer another language, check this list before buying: Spanish has separate versions for Spain and Latin America, and Portuguese on PC and PS5 is the Brazilian variant. Turkish and Ukrainian are not in the game.

How to change the language in GTA 5

The steps depend on the platform (according to Rockstar Support):

  • PS5 and PS4. The game language matches the console language. Change it in the system settings, under language, and restart the game.
  • Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Same idea, through the console settings: General → Language & location.
  • PC, Rockstar Games Launcher. Open the launcher → Settings → General → Language and pick a language.
  • PC, Epic Games Store. Official help suggests changing the language in Epic's settings before launching the game. Because the game starts through Rockstar Games Launcher, you sometimes need to change it there too.
  • PC, Steam. The language is usually set in the Steam library: right-click the game → Properties → Language. We did not find an official Rockstar guide specifically for Steam, so if the language does not change, check the Rockstar Games Launcher settings.

If your game suddenly shows another language, the cause is almost always the console or launcher setting, not the game itself. For older consoles Rockstar describes separate combinations: on Xbox 360 you hold LB + RB while the game loads.

Unofficial GTA 5 fan translations

Players whose language is missing from GTA 5 make fan translations, and the community shares them through Steam, mod sites and themed groups. If you are thinking of installing one, or any mod that replaces the game's text, here is what to know:

  • It is a mod. A translation replaces the game's text files, so it only works on PC and only in the version (Legacy or Enhanced) it was made for. It cannot be installed on PS4, PS5 or Xbox.
  • Game updates can break it, or even stop the game from launching, until the authors update the files.
  • Story Mode only. Do not go into GTA Online with modified files: it runs the BattlEye anti-cheat, and changed files can get you banned.
  • Safety. Malware is sometimes spread disguised as "translations". Back up the game, scan files with antivirus and do not run .exe files from unknown sites.

We do not link to fan translations: Rockstar does not check or support them. How to install mods safely in general is covered on the GTA 5 mods page.

Following the GTA 5 story

The dialogue is fast and full of slang, so even native speakers sometimes miss lines. Turning on subtitles in the game's display settings helps, and so do our pages on GTA 5 missions and GTA 5 characters.

Which languages GTA 6 will have is covered on the GTA 6 languages page.

GTA 5 language FAQ

What languages is GTA 5 voiced in?

English only. There is no dubbed version on any platform; other languages get subtitles and menus.

How do I change the language in GTA 5 on PS4 or PS5?

Change the console language in the system settings: the game automatically uses the same language if it supports it.

How do I change the language in GTA 5 on PC?

In Rockstar Games Launcher: Settings → General → Language. For the Epic version you can also change the language in Epic's settings before launch.

Do fan translations work with GTA 5 Enhanced?

Each fan translation is made for a specific version of the game. Check that it supports Enhanced and use it only in Story Mode: Rockstar does not support such mods.

Can I play GTA Online in another language?

Yes, within the same list of languages as the game, by changing the console or launcher language. Translation mods are banned in Online.
