GTA 6 controls on PS5 and Xbox: Rockstar hasn't shown the button layout yet

Rockstar has not published official GTA 6 controls for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S as of October 31, 2026. Here is what the An Extended Look gameplay video shows, which button changes people are talking about after the preview, what the game does with DualSense and how to remap buttons today.

Коротко
  • Rockstar has not published an official GTA 6 control scheme: not on the game's site, not on Newswire, not on the PS Store or Xbox Store listings (checked 10/31/2026).
  • Some actions can be seen in the An Extended Look gameplay video, captured on PS5: cover shooting, shooting from cars, interacting with a dog, the gym.
  • Sprinting on L3 instead of tapping X and the handbrake on X come from one YouTuber after a preview session. Rockstar has not confirmed them.
  • On PS5 the game supports DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and the controller speaker; on Xbox it carries the Optimized for Xbox Series X|S badge.
  • Sony is releasing two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers on November 19 for $84.99 / £74.99.

Is there an official GTA 6 control scheme?

No. As of October 31, 2026, Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 button layout for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. We checked the game's site rockstargames.com/VI, every Newswire post about GTA VI, the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings and the game page on playstation.com: there is no controls table and no digital manual.

For earlier Rockstar games the full layout usually showed up in the in-game settings menu and in manuals at launch. GTA 6 will most likely follow suit. The game comes out on November 19, 2026, and on launch day we will update this page with the real in-game layout for both platforms.

The "GTA 6 controls" charts already circulating online were put together by fans from trailer footage and GTA 5 experience. Some of them say outright that the layout may change. We don't publish those charts: a made-up button helps less than an honest "unknown".

What the An Extended Look gameplay video shows

An Extended Look is a 26-minute video Rockstar released on August 27, 2026. It was captured entirely from gameplay on PlayStation 5, so it is the closest thing to real controls we have before launch. On-screen button prompts only appear now and then, so below are actions, not a layout.

What is shownHow it looks in the video
Cover shootingJason takes cover behind a wall in a corridor and fires, leaning out of cover
Shooting from vehiclesThe protagonists shoot from a car, including from the back seat at a helicopter
Non-lethal hitsYou can shoot an enemy in the leg and take them out of the fight without killing them
Stealing carsQuietly, with a lock tool, or fast, by smashing the window
Character switchingBetween Jason and Lucia, instantly when they are close or via a short camera fly-over from a distance
Animal interactionHolding L2 next to a dog brings up "pet", "scold" and "study" options

The gym came up in an interview Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson gave to Japanese magazine Famitsu: exercises are done with the L2 and R2 triggers. More on these systems on the GTA 6 gameplay page.

Sprint on L3 and handbrake on X: the reported button changes

In early September 2026 several outlets, including Dexerto, IBTimes and Notebookcheck, reported that GTA 6 drops sprinting by tapping X, a series staple for almost a quarter of a century (A on Xbox). Instead you supposedly click the left stick, L3 (LS on Xbox), as in most modern shooters. The second change: the vehicle handbrake moved from R1 (RB) to X (A), because your right hand is now busy shooting from the car.

All of those reports trace back to one source: Italian YouTuber MikeShowSha, who spent about two hours with a preview build at Rockstar North and talked about it in a video on August 29. Rockstar has neither confirmed nor denied these changes. It is also unknown whether the game will offer a classic control option or its own button remapping menu.

Our take: the changes are plausible and make sense in a game where you shoot from cars a lot, but until launch this is one person's account of a preview build. The final version may differ.

DualSense and Xbox: what the game does with your controller

On the game's playstation.com page, Sony lists the DualSense features GTA 6 supports:

  • haptic feedback;
  • adaptive triggers;
  • the built-in controller speaker;
  • Tempest 3D Audio.

How exactly Rockstar uses haptics and triggers, whether for shooting, driving or something else, has not been officially explained. On PS5 Pro the game is labeled "PS5 Pro Enhanced", but Sony and Rockstar don't say what is improved. PS Store also lists Remote Play support, so you can stream the game from your own PS5 to another device.

The Xbox Store labels GTA 6 "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" and mentions achievements and cloud saves. It does not list any Xbox controller-specific features such as impulse triggers. More on consoles on the GTA 6 platforms page.

Limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers

On September 3, 2026, Sony announced two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers on the PlayStation Blog: the White Limited Edition (Vice City at dawn) and the Black Limited Edition (the city's nightlife). The shell features embossed palm trees and official game branding, and the finish shifts color depending on the angle.

How to remap buttons if you don't like the layout

Rockstar hasn't said whether GTA 6 will have its own button remapping. Both consoles can do it at the system level, though, and those settings apply to any game:

  • PS5: Settings → Accessibility → Controllers → Custom Button Assignments. You can swap any buttons, for example move sprint from L3 to another button.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Xbox Accessories app → select your controller → Configure → Button mapping. You can save profiles and switch between them.

If you plan to play on day one, update your controller and console firmware ahead of time. The rest of the prep is in our guide How to get ready for GTA 6 launch.

GTA 6 controls FAQ

What are the GTA 6 controls on PS5?

Rockstar hasn't published the official button layout yet. It will arrive with the game on November 19, 2026, and we will add it to this page then.

Is it true that you sprint with L3 in GTA 6?

That comes from YouTuber MikeShowSha after a preview at Rockstar North. Rockstar has not confirmed the change, so for now it is unofficial.

Will you be able to remap buttons in GTA 6?

It's not known whether the game has its own remapping menu. But PS5 and Xbox Series X|S let you remap buttons in system settings, and that will work in GTA 6.

Does GTA 6 support DualSense features?

Yes. According to Sony, the game supports haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, the controller speaker and Tempest 3D Audio.

How much is the GTA 6 DualSense controller?

The suggested price is $84.99 in the US and £74.99 in the UK. Both the white and black versions launch on November 19, 2026 in limited numbers.

Can you play GTA 6 with keyboard and mouse?

GTA 6 is coming only to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar hasn't said anything about keyboard and mouse support on consoles. A PC version hasn't been announced; what we know is on the GTA 6 on PC page.
