All GTA 5 weapons in Story Mode by category: pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, heavy and melee weapons, Ammu-Nation prices and the missions that unlock them. Plus the weapons that exist only in GTA Online.
How weapons work in GTA 5
GTA 5 weapons are split into the same classes as the weapon wheel: melee, pistols, shotguns, SMGs and machine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, heavy weapons and throwables. Unlike older games in the series, you're not limited to one gun per class: the whole arsenal fits in your pockets, and ammo is topped up separately for each type.
The main source is the Ammu-Nation stores in Los Santos and Blaine County. They also sell ammo, body armor, scopes, suppressors, extended magazines and tints. Some weapons are unlocked by story missions: until you finish the mission, the gun isn't on the shelf. The other way is to pick weapons up from enemies or find them in the world: the game scatters grenades, sticky bombs, Molotov cocktails and some melee weapons around the map.
There's also a cheat for a full weapon set: it works in Story Mode but disables achievements and trophies for the rest of the session. The code and all the details are in GTA 5 cheats.
Every GTA 5 Story Mode weapon: prices and unlocks
Names are in English, as in the game. Prices are for Story Mode; the same guns cost differently in GTA Online. We only kept prices and missions that match across two independent sources (the Game8 guide and the GTA Wiki on Fandom). A dash in the mission column means the sources don't agree on it, or the gun is available from the start of the relevant part of the story.

What to buy first
Ammu-Nation prices early on aren't as steep as they look: the basic Pistol, Micro SMG, SMG, Assault Rifle and Pump Shotgun cost between $350 and $1,400. The real spending starts with heavy weapons and the guns added in updates: the Musket is $21,400, the Marksman Rifle $15,750, the Special Carbine $14,750.
- Early on: the Carbine Rifle after The Jewel Store Job, an accurate rifle for $2,100.
- For chases: the Micro SMG, which you can fire from a car or a motorcycle.
- For long range: the Sniper Rifle for $5,000 after Nervous Ron, then the Heavy Sniper for $9,500.
- Against vehicles: the RPG for $6,500, or the Homing Launcher, which unlocks after Minor Turbulence.
- Late game: the Railgun for $250,000, the most expensive gun in the story.
The easiest way to fund an expensive arsenal is heists and investments; we explain how they work on the GTA 5 heists page. The story missions that unlock weapons are listed in GTA 5 missions.
GTA Online-only weapons
GTA Online gets new weapons with every major update, and most of them never made it into Story Mode. The most notable ones:
- Mk II weapons: upgraded versions of base guns (Pistol Mk II, Combat MG Mk II, Pump Shotgun Mk II and others) with special ammo and modifications. They're built from the base model and aren't available in Story Mode.
- Up-n-Atomizer and the other "space" weapons from the holiday updates.
- Navy Revolver and Double-Action Revolver: revolvers tied to the Red Dead world; completing tasks with them in GTA Online gives you bonuses in Red Dead Redemption 2 or Red Dead Online. The same goes for the Stone Hatchet.
- Gun Van: a van that works as a weapon shop. Rockstar launched it on January 12, 2023 as part of the Los Santos Drug Wars update. The van appears every day at one of 30 possible locations, and it's where GTA Online sells, among other things, the Railgun.
Cheats don't work in GTA Online, and third-party "weapon menus" for online play get your account banned. For how the online mode works, see the GTA Online section.
GTA 5 weapons FAQ
Where do you buy weapons in GTA 5?
At Ammu-Nation stores, found both in Los Santos and in Blaine County. They also sell ammo, body armor and attachments. Some weapons only appear on the shelf after certain story missions.
Why doesn't Ammu-Nation have the gun I want?
The range is unlocked by the story. For example, the Carbine Rifle appears after The Jewel Store Job, the Heavy Sniper after Three's Company, the Railgun after Minor Turbulence.
What's the most expensive weapon in GTA 5 Story Mode?
The Railgun: $250,000 at Ammu-Nation after the mission Minor Turbulence.
How do you get the Assault SMG in Story Mode?
It isn't sold: the gun becomes available once you link a Rockstar Games Social Club account to your game profile.
What is the Gun Van, and is it in Story Mode?
It's a van-based weapon shop that exists only in GTA Online. It arrived on January 12, 2023 and parks at one of 30 spots on the map each day. There's no Gun Van in Story Mode.
How do you get all weapons at once?
With the cheat TOOLUP on PC, a button combination on consoles, or by dialing 1-999-866-587 on the in-game phone. The cheat only works in Story Mode and disables achievements and trophies for the rest of the session. All the codes are on the GTA 5 cheats page.
