Max Payne: three games, a Remedy remake and where to buy the series in 2026

Max Payne is a third-person shooter about a New York cop who loses his family and goes to war against the drug mob. The series' signature is bullet time: slowed-down time in which Max dives and shoots while enemies barely move. The story is told as a noir graphic novel, narrated by Max himself.

The first game was made by Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment on its own MAX-FX engine. The second, The Fall of Max Payne, continued the story of Max and Mona Sax and added Havok physics. Take-Two later bought the rights to the series, and Rockstar's studios made Max Payne 3 themselves, on the RAGE engine with Euphoria animation, as in GTA IV. The third game moved the action to São Paulo.

Xbox backward compatibility. Since November 15, 2021, all three games run on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation: the first game came to PS4 on April 22, 2016 as a PS2 Classic and also runs on PS5. Max Payne 2 and Max Payne 3 aren't available on PS4 or PS5, and the PS3 disc of the third game won't run on newer consoles.

Remedy and Rockstar announced the remake on April 6, 2022. It is a single game that combines the first two entries. Remedy is developing it on its Northlight engine (the one behind Control and Alan Wake 2), and Rockstar is paying for it, with a budget that Remedy says is in line with a typical big game from the studio. The platforms at announcement were PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

In Remedy's financial report for the first half of 2026, published on August 11, the project is listed as "Full production", with Rockstar Games as publisher. The game entered full production back in 2024.

What doesn't exist yet: a release date, a trailer, a final title or a price. Any "2026" or "2027" you see online is guesswork. Remedy's next report comes out on November 3, 2026, and any new details will most likely come from there or from Rockstar.

Rockstar has not announced Max Payne 4.

Prices are as of October 31, 2026. On Xbox, all three games are playable through backward compatibility; check the current price in the Xbox Store for your region.

Note that Steam doesn't sell the first Max Payne in every region, so if it doesn't show up in your store, the PS4 version or the mobile port are the alternatives. The Rockstar Store sells only Max Payne 3; the first two games aren't there. Max Payne 3 on Steam requires a Rockstar Games account.

None of the games in the series are part of the GTA+ library, so a subscription won't help here.

On Steam, the Max Payne 3 requirements are given as a single "from–to" block, not split into minimum and recommended:

All Max Payne 3 DLC on PC has been free since update 1.0.0.255 (April 2021): Steam sells the game as the Complete Edition with the multiplayer maps and modes. The same update dropped support for 32-bit systems. On PS3 and Xbox 360, Max Payne 3's online services were shut down on September 16, 2021; the story mode still works there.

The first two games on Steam have Windows XP-era requirements: Max Payne 2 needs only 1 GHz and 256 MB of memory. Compatibility with recent Windows versions isn't officially stated for them.

Max Payne Mobile is a port of the first game for iOS (April 12, 2012) and Android (June 14, 2012). It is a paid game: $2.99 on the US App Store. On Google Play, Rockstar released an update on June 2, 2026 that fixed crashes on newer Android phones. Max Payne 2 and 3 never came to phones, so any "Max Payne 3 APK" is a fake that is unsafe to install.

Max Payne and Max Payne 2 on Steam are English only. Max Payne 3 has English voice acting and its interface and subtitles are translated into nine more European and Asian languages. For English-speaking players nothing is lost: all three games were written and voiced in English. Rockstar does not support fan translations; if you install one, back up your game files first.
