All GTA 5 platforms and what is on them
GTA 5 platforms have changed three times in 13 years: the game launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, on PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2014–2015, and on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022. In 2025 the PC version got the free Enhanced update. Rockstar's official page now lists only PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, although bundles that include the PS4 and Xbox One versions are still on sale.

GTA 5 Enhanced or Legacy: which to pick on PC
Legacy is no longer sold on its own: when you buy GTA 5 on Steam or the Epic Games Store, you get both versions and choose which one to launch. The choice depends on your PC.

Go with Enhanced if you have an RTX 3060-class graphics card and an SSD: the image looks noticeably more modern, and Enhanced has been free for PC owners since March 4, 2025. Stay on Legacy if your PC is weak. Full specs are on the GTA 5 system requirements page.
PS5 or PS4, Xbox Series or Xbox One
If you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, play the new-gen version. It came out on March 15, 2022 with new graphics modes, and on PlayStation Store it is sold as a single product, "GTA V (PS4 & PS5)", which lets you download both versions. Xbox works the same way, with the "GTA V (Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S)" bundle.
- Free upgrade since June 18, 2026. Owners of the PS4 version (disc or digital) can download the PS5 version from the game's page on PlayStation Store. The disc has to be in the console for verification.
- Xbox One: digital only. Rockstar says owners of the Xbox One disc cannot move to the digital version because of platform restrictions.
- PS3 and Xbox 360 do not get a free upgrade. GTA Online there was shut down on December 16, 2021; Story Mode still works.

Does GTA 5 have crossplay
No. Story Mode does not need it, and in GTA Online, according to GTABase and GamesRadar, players are split by platform:
- PlayStation, Xbox and PC do not play together;
- PS5 and PS4 are separate player pools, as are Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: to play with a friend on PS4, a PS5 owner has to launch the PS4 version;
- on PC, Legacy and Enhanced players play separately.

How to transfer your progress
Story Mode progress moves through your Rockstar Games account from PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S:
- Link your console account to your Rockstar Games account.
- On PS4 or Xbox One, open the pause menu, go to the Game tab and choose Upload Save Game.
- On the new console, open the Story tab on the start screen or in the pause menu and download the save.
Limits from Rockstar Support: one save per console; after it is downloaded on the new console, no further uploads from that account are possible; the save stays on the server for 90 days. Saves from PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 cannot be transferred. After the transfer, progress on the old and new consoles does not sync.
GTA Online characters move through a separate one-time migration between console generations; on PC, from Legacy to Enhanced.
Switch, phones, cloud and subscriptions
- Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: there is no version and none has been announced. There are only 2026 rumors and comments from the studio Virtuos, which says it would like to make such a port.
- Android and iOS: the game is not available; sites offering a "GTA 5 APK" are fakes. Details on the GTA 5 mobile page.
- PS Plus Extra / Premium: the game is in the catalog until November 17, 2026, and is removed after that.
- Xbox Game Pass: the game has been out of the catalog since April 15, 2026.
What to choose: quick summary
- You have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S: buy the "PS4 & PS5" or "Xbox One & Series" bundle; if you already own the game on PS4 or digitally on Xbox One, the upgrade is free.
- You have a PC with an RTX 3060 and an SSD: Enhanced.
- Weak PC: Legacy (it comes with the same purchase).
- Only a PS4 or Xbox One: the game works, and this is the last generation still supported by GTA Online; Rockstar has not given an end date.

Which is better, GTA 5 Enhanced or Legacy?
Enhanced, if your PC has an SSD and an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT-class graphics card: you get ray tracing, DLSS 3 and faster loading. Legacy is for weaker PCs. On Steam and Epic, both versions come with one purchase.
Is GTA 5 on Nintendo Switch?
No. Rockstar has not released or announced GTA 5 for Switch or Switch 2. There are only rumors and statements from the third-party studio Virtuos.
Does GTA 5 have crossplay between PS5 and Xbox?
No. In GTA Online, PlayStation, Xbox and PC do not play together. Even PS4 and PS5 have separate player pools, as do Legacy and Enhanced on PC.
Can you upgrade GTA 5 from PS4 to PS5 for free?
