Red Dead Redemption 2: what you need to know about the game in 2026

America, 1899. Arthur Morgan is one of the most loyal men of Dutch van der Linde, the leader of the gang that raised him. After a job goes wrong in Blackwater, the gang is on the run from federal agents and bounty hunters, and Arthur has to choose between his own ideals and loyalty to his "family".

The story is split into six chapters and a two-part epilogue, with more than a hundred story missions. Alongside Arthur are John Marston (the hero of the first Red Dead Redemption), Dutch, Hosea Matthews, Sadie Adler, Charles Smith and Micah Bell. According to Dan Houser, the story script ran to about 2,000 pages, and 1,200 actors were captured for motion capture.

The map covers fictional Wild West states: New Hanover, Ambarino, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth and New Austin, plus the island of Guarma, which you only reach through the story. The main towns are Valentine, Saint Denis, Rhodes, Strawberry, Blackwater and Annesburg. New Austin is the territory of the first Red Dead Redemption.

Is RDR2 coming to PS5? Rockstar has not announced a separate version. Insiders in 2026 say different things, from "this year" to "after GTA 6", so for now it is a rumor. There is a precedent: the first Red Dead Redemption got a PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 version in December 2025 as a free upgrade.

Prices as of October 31, 2026. PlayStation Store is running an 80% discount on the Ultimate Edition until November 5: $19.99. Every edition includes both Story Mode and Red Dead Online.

PS Plus and Game Pass. RDR2 returned to the PlayStation Plus Extra / Premium catalog in May 2026, but according to PlayStation Store it leaves on November 17, 2026. It is not on Game Pass right now.

Voice acting is English only on every platform, so English speakers hear the game as it was recorded. Subtitles and menus are available in more languages, including French, Italian, German, Spanish (for Spain and for Latin America), Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. On consoles the game takes its language from the system settings; on PC, from Rockstar Launcher or Steam.

RDR2 has 37 cheat codes: English phrases you type into the settings menu, some of them unlocked through newspapers. The full table is on the RDR2 cheats page. An active cheat disables saving and trophies.

There are 19 horse breeds in Story Mode. Rockstar has never published an official ranking; according to players the best are the Arabians, followed by the Turkoman and the Missouri Fox Trotter. For 100% completion you need, among other things, to finish every story mission and Strangers line, complete 90 challenges, and collect 20 dreamcatchers and 30 dinosaur bones.

The online mode comes with RDR2, and since December 2020 it has also been sold on its own ($17.99 on PlayStation Store in the US). The servers are up and Rockstar runs bonus events every month, but there have been no major updates since July 2022, when the studio said it was focusing on other projects. The last major update was Blood Money (2021). Playing on console requires PlayStation Plus or Game Pass Core / Ultimate; on PC it does not. Up to 32 players per session.
