What the game is about
There are three leads: Michael De Santa, a retired bank robber, Franklin Clinton, a young street hustler, and Trevor Philips, an unpredictable psychopath. You can switch between them almost at any moment. The game is set in the city of Los Santos and in Blaine County.
The story runs 69 missions by the game's own stats, with five major heists (from the jewel store to The Big Score) and three endings, chosen by Franklin in the finale. Around the leads are heist planner Lester Crest, Franklin's friend Lamar Davis and Michael's family.

On PlayStation, one purchase of "GTA V (PS4 & PS5)" covers both versions. On Xbox, "GTA V (Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S)" works the same way. On PS5 and Xbox Series, GTA Online is also sold on its own, with Story Mode available as an in-game upgrade.

Figures from the game's Steam pages. Both versions need a Rockstar Games account. Enhanced officially requires an SSD, so an older PC without one is left with Legacy.
Languages: voice acting and subtitles
Voice acting is English only on every platform, so English speakers get the game exactly as it was recorded. Subtitles and menus are available in several more languages, including French, Italian, German, Spanish (separate versions for Spain and Latin America), Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.
Cheats, mods and FiveM
Cheats. GTA 5 Story Mode has more than 30 cheat codes: button combos on a controller, the console on PC, or a number dialed on the character's phone. There is no money cheat, and cheats do not work in GTA Online. The full table is on the GTA 5 cheats page.
Mods. Rockstar allows single-player mods on PC under its own rules (Mod Guidelines, updated in September 2026): no changing the official story and characters, no porting content from other games, no cheat menus, no porting the game to other platforms. Mods are banned in GTA Online.
FiveM. Cfx.re, the team behind the FiveM roleplay servers for GTA 5 and RedM for RDR2, has been part of Rockstar Games since August 2023.
GTA 5 on mobile and Switch
There is no official version of GTA 5 for Android or iPhone. Sites offering a "GTA 5 APK" or "OBB" are fakes and may carry malware. The only legitimate way to play from a phone is Remote Play from your own console; PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming works on PS5, PlayStation Portal and PC, not on phones. Rockstar has not announced a version for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.
Waiting for the sequel? Everything about the new game is on the GTA 6 page.
