GTA RP and FiveM: how to start playing on GTA 5 roleplay servers in 2026

GTA RP (roleplay) means playing GTA 5 on roleplay servers where you do not run missions but live the life of a made-up character: you work as a cab driver, cop, medic or mechanic, open a business or turn to crime. Other players are characters too, and everyone follows the server's rules. GTA RP took off thanks to streamers, and the servers themselves are built and run by communities, not by Rockstar.

GTA RP is not GTA Online. These are separate servers with their own economy, jobs, cars and rules. Your money, property and character from GTA Online do not carry over, and vice versa.

The most common platform for GTA RP is FiveM from the Cfx.re team; its counterpart for Red Dead Redemption 2 is RedM. On August 11, 2023 Rockstar announced that the Cfx.re team had "officially become part of Rockstar Games". The terms were not disclosed: Rockstar calls it joining, the press reported it as an acquisition. Rockstar's support site now has a dedicated section for the FiveM and RedM communities.

In July 2026 Cfx.re launched early access to FiveM for GTA V Enhanced, a separate client with an updated OneSync engine that, according to GTA Boom, holds up to 2,048 players per server. Classic FiveM for Legacy stays: Enhanced servers accept only Enhanced players, and Legacy servers only Legacy players.

1. Buy GTA V on PC. A copy from Steam, Epic Games Store, the Rockstar Games Launcher or the Microsoft Store (since April 2025) will do. A Steam or Epic purchase includes GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy. The US price on Steam is $29.99 (October 31, 2026; it is 50% off, $14.99, until November 5).
2. Download FiveM from the official site, fivem.net; the client is free. Enhanced servers need the separate FiveM Enhanced client.
3. Launch the game at least once and make sure it runs without mods.
4. Find a server in the FiveM list (filter by language, player count, tags) and read its rules.
5. Register if the server requires it: many servers run a whitelist and ask for a character application.
6. Set up your mic: RP without voice barely works anywhere.

Official requirements from the game's Steam pages (October 31, 2026). Big RP servers with hundreds of players and their own cars and maps put more load on your system than the regular game, so in practice aim for the recommended specs and 16 GB of RAM.

Every server has its own rules, but most communities use the same terms:

• RDM / VDM (Random Death Match / Vehicle Death Match): no killing or running over players without a roleplay reason.
• Metagaming: you cannot use in-game what you learned outside it (from a stream or Discord).
• Powergaming: no actions that are impossible in real life or leave others no chance to respond.
• Fear RP: your character must fear for their life; you do not charge someone who has a gun on you.
• NLR (New Life Rule): after a "death" your character does not remember what happened and does not come back for revenge.
• OOC / IC: out-of-character talk is kept separate from in-character talk.

Violations are punished with a warning, a temporary or a permanent ban from the server, handed out by the server's admins, not by Rockstar.

Yes. FiveM and RedM are an official licensed platform: in its Mod Guidelines (updated September 10, 2026) Rockstar says multiplayer mods are allowed only through the official Creator Platform, and other multiplayer mods are not. Servers must follow Rockstar's and Cfx.re's rules, including on monetization and other people's intellectual property; Rockstar can take down any mod or project.

The risks for players are practical rather than legal: unverified "FiveM packs" and "RP cheats" from unofficial sites can carry malware. Download the client only from fivem.net, and remember that cheating on RP servers gets you banned by the server itself. Unlike FiveM, mods in GTA Online are banned; see GTA Online cheats.

We do not advertise specific servers or publish rankings of them. Before you join, check:

• language and community: look for servers in your language and region, and find out who runs the project;
• rules and moderation: clearly written rules and active admins matter more than player count;
• donations: a server should not sell in-game advantages for real money against Cfx.re's rules;
• version: Legacy or Enhanced, so you have the matching client;
• reviews in player communities, not just the server's own ads.

There are no mobile versions of FiveM or GTA 5. Android and iOS apps with "GTA RP" in the name are separate games by third-party developers, unrelated to Rockstar. There is no GTA RP on consoles either: FiveM runs on PC only.
