From announcement to the 2013 launch
Rockstar Games announced GTA 5 on October 25, 2011, and showed the first trailer a week later, on November 2, 2011. It confirmed the series was heading back to Los Santos.
At first the publisher gave a spring 2013 window. On January 31, 2013, Rockstar moved the launch to September 17, 2013, roughly four months later, to get more development time. That date held, and the game came out on both consoles at once. According to Take-Two, day-one retail sales topped $800 million.
GTA Online launched separately on October 1, 2013. On PS3 and Xbox 360 the online mode ran until December 16, 2021, when Rockstar shut it down; Story Mode is still playable on the old consoles.
When GTA 5 came out on PC and why it was delayed
The PC version was announced at E3 in June 2014 alongside PS4 and Xbox One, and all three were supposed to arrive in fall 2014. The consoles got the game on November 18, 2014, while the PC version slipped three times:
| Announced | New date | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| June 2014 (E3) | Fall 2014 | Announced with PS4 and Xbox One |
| September 2014 | Jan 27, 2015 | PC split off from the consoles |
| Jan 13, 2015 | Mar 24, 2015 | Second delay, first PC screenshots and specs |
| Feb 24, 2015 | Apr 14, 2015 | Third delay, final date |
Rockstar said it needed extra time for polish. The PC version launched on April 14, 2015, with 60 frames per second, 4K resolution and the Rockstar Editor video tool. On Steam it is now called GTAV Legacy. Requirements for both PC versions are on the GTA 5 system requirements page.
PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Enhanced
The current-generation console version was announced in June 2020 for 2021. Rockstar later set November 11, 2021, then in September 2021 pushed it to March 2022, saying it needed more work. On February 4, 2022, the exact date arrived: March 15. Standalone GTA Online launched on PS5 the same day and stayed free until June 14, 2022.
PC caught up on March 4, 2025, when Rockstar released the free GTAV Enhanced update with ray tracing, DLSS 3, FSR and DirectStorage. The old version was renamed GTAV Legacy and is still available. On June 18, 2026, Rockstar also made the upgrade from PS4 to PS5, and from the digital Xbox One version to Xbox Series X|S, free.
