Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told The Wall Street Journal at its WSJ Tech event why he agreed to push GTA 6 back, and he doesn't regret it. To show what happens when a studio ships an unfinished game, he pointed to a "very high profile release" from a rival without naming it, PC Gamer reports.
Rockstar asked for more time ten days after a board retreat
Asked whether he yelled at Rockstar when the studio said last year it needed more time, Zelnick said he doesn't always feel calm, even if he comes across that way. The request landed just ten days after a board retreat, so the timing could hardly have been worse.
According to GTA BOOM, the call came from the executive who runs Rockstar's business side and has worked with Zelnick for nearly two decades. "This was not a nice-to-have," he said. "This was a must-have."
No names, but a fairly obvious hint at a competitor
"I'm not going to throw any competitors under the bus," Zelnick said, before describing a release where "they shipped, and they had to pull the title after shipping because it didn't work." He didn't name the game. Tech4Gamers and others read it as a reference to Cyberpunk 2077's 2020 launch.
Zelnick tied the decision to Take-Two's mission "to make the best entertainment on earth": if that's the goal, sometimes you have to make expensive and inconvenient calls. "Culture, like character, is tested in the breach," he added.
He has been making the same case for a year
Back in November 2025, after GTA 6 moved from May 26 to November 19, 2026, Zelnick told investors that slipping a date is always painful, but "we've never regretted it in retrospect." He also noted that some competitors chose not to delay games that needed more polish "and they did so at their peril," as TheGamer recalls.
With launch now less than two weeks away, the comments read more like a closing argument than an excuse. We keep the GTA 6 release date details in one place, and our launch prep guide covers what to sort out before day one.
