How many hours Red Dead Redemption 2 takes: HowLongToBeat data as of 6 November 2026 for the main story, main story plus extras, 100% and speedruns, platform differences, the number of chapters and missions, how long the epilogue is and what eats up the most time.
How many hours to beat RDR2: HowLongToBeat data
How long it takes to beat RDR2 depends on how you play. Rockstar never gave an official figure, so we used HowLongToBeat, a site where players log their own times. The snapshot was taken on 6 November 2026.
| Play style | Average | Median | Playthroughs logged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Story | ≈50.8 h | 50 h | 2486 |
| Main + Extras | ≈84.6 h | 80 h | 5004 |
| Completionist (100%) | ≈196.3 h | 189 h | 729 |
| All Styles | ≈79 h | — | 8219 |
| Speedrun Any% | ≈14.2 h | — | 3 entries |
| Speedrun 100% | ≈35.2 h | — | 1 entry |
Other estimates are close. PinkNews puts the story at 40–60 hours. In December 2023 Dexerto quoted ≈50 hours for the story, 80+ with extras and up to 182 for 100%. The 100% figure has grown since: HowLongToBeat now shows ≈196 hours.
How to read these numbers
The average and the median differ for a reason. The median is the time of the "typical" player in the middle of the list, while the average gets pulled up by people who spent far longer in the game. That’s why 100% has a median of 189 hours and an average of ≈196.
Sample size matters too. Thousands of people logged the main story and main + extras, so those numbers are stable. The 729 entries for 100% are also enough. The speedruns, though, rest on 3 entries and 1 entry: treat them as a rough guide, not a norm.
"Main + Extras" is the broadest category: every player decides how much side content to do, so your own time can land well above or below ≈85 hours. If you play slowly, hunt and just ride around the world, go by this row rather than the "pure" story.
Our pages used to say ≈180 hours for 100%, which was Dexerto’s 2023 figure. We’ve now updated it to ≈196 per HowLongToBeat as of 6 November 2026.
Completion time by platform
HowLongToBeat also splits the data by the platform players used:
| Platform | Main Story | Main + Extras | 100% |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC | 52.5 h | 89.9 h | 205.7 h |
| PS4 | 50.2 h | 87.3 h | 198.4 h |
| PS5 | 50.6 h | 87.0 h | 233.6 h |
| Xbox One | 51.0 h | 90.3 h | 195.5 h |
| Xbox Series X/S | 52.0 h | 96.5 h | 217.7 h |
For the story the difference is a couple of hours, so the platform barely matters. For 100% the spread is wider: from ≈196 to ≈234 hours. Which platforms the game came out on is covered on our RDR2 platforms page.
How many chapters and missions RDR2 has
The story is made up of 6 chapters and a two-part epilogue: Colter, Horseshoe Overlook, Clemens Point, Saint Denis, Guarma, Beaver Hollow, then Pronghorn Ranch and Beecher’s Hope. Rockstar never gave an official mission count. Red Dead Wiki counts 109: 94 story missions and 15 optional Honor missions. For 100% you need 107.
For Chapter 6 the wiki counts 25 missions, optional ones included.
| Part | Camp / location |
|---|---|
| Chapter 1 | Colter (Ambarino) |
| Chapter 2 | Horseshoe Overlook (New Hanover) |
| Chapter 3 | Clemens Point (Lemoyne) |
| Chapter 4 | Shady Belle / Saint Denis (Lemoyne) |
| Chapter 5 | Guarma |
| Chapter 6 | Beaver Hollow (New Hanover) |
| Epilogue 1 | Pronghorn Ranch (West Elizabeth) |
| Epilogue 2 | Beecher’s Hope (West Elizabeth) |
The full list by chapter is on our RDR2 missions page, and what to get done in each chapter is in our RDR2 walkthrough.
How long the RDR2 epilogue is
The epilogue has two parts: 11 missions at Pronghorn Ranch and 11 missions at Beecher’s Hope plus a story cutscene (the wiki counts it as a separate mission, so it lists 12). The action moves to 1907.
HowLongToBeat doesn’t track the epilogue separately, so we took estimates from the press: Screen Rant says about six hours, Twinfinite reports its own run at ≈4 hours and an overall estimate of "6+". Realistically it’s 4–7 hours of story alone. Add free roam on top: the epilogue opens New Austin and the rest of the map. What happens in the finale is in our RDR2 endings guide (spoilers).
What takes the most time and how not to waste it
Between ≈51 hours for the story and ≈196 for 100% there are more than 140 hours of side content. Most of that time goes on:
- 90 challenges: 9 categories of 10, the longest part of 100%. Each one only unlocks after the previous one.
- Stranger strands: the next part usually unlocks after 2–3 in-game days. The list is on our RDR2 Stranger missions page.
- The Compendium and collectibles: 50 animals, 20 plants, 48 weapons, bones, dreamcatchers, rock carvings.
To save time, 100% guides recommend a few things: pick up collectibles along the way from Chapter 2, do challenges alongside the story, and ride the same horse the whole time to reach bond level 4. Details are in our RDR2 100% checklist.
The Platinum is an even longer goal: PowerPyx estimates 240–300 hours, and it includes Red Dead Online trophies. The list is on our RDR2 achievements page.
