RDR2 on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PC: where to play it in 2026

Updated: 01.11.2026 Author: Alex Rayne
A rider on a hill against the setting sun in Red Dead Redemption 2

Which platforms Red Dead Redemption 2 is on as of October 31, 2026: PS4 and PS5 via backward compatibility, Xbox One and Series, PC, Steam Deck, cloud. Whether a next-gen version and a Switch 2 port are coming — what is official, what is rumor, and which platform to pick.

In short
  • RDR2 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S runs through backward compatibility — there is no separate next-gen version as of October 31, 2026.
  • On PS5 the game runs at 30 fps; on Xbox Series X it runs at native 4K and 30 fps, like the Xbox One X version.
  • PC (Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher) has the best graphics and DLSS since July 13, 2021; Steam Deck is rated Playable.
  • There is no Switch or Switch 2 version; a Switch 2 port and a next-gen patch are insider rumors only.
  • RDR2 is in PS Plus Extra/Premium until November 17, 2026, and it is not in Xbox Game Pass right now.

RDR2 on PS5, Xbox and PC: platform table

RDR2 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC is the most common question before buying. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on October 26, 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One, on November 5, 2019 on PC, and on December 5, 2019 on Steam. As of October 31, 2026, Rockstar has announced neither a native PS5 and Xbox Series version nor a Switch 2 port.

RDR2 on PS5 and PS5 Pro

On PlayStation Store, RDR2 is sold as a PS4 game. On PS5 it runs through backward compatibility at 30 frames per second. There is no official 60 fps mode; patches that "unlock" the frame rate exist only for jailbroken consoles, and we do not recommend them. Rockstar has not announced any PS5 Pro enhancement.

There is no PS4 to PS5 upgrade as such, because there is no PS5 version: your PS4 copy (disc or digital) simply works on the new console, saves included. A PS4 disc only works on a PS5 with a disc drive.

PS Plus. RDR2 and Red Dead Online returned to the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog on May 19, 2026. According to the store listing, the game stays in the catalog until November 17, 2026. On the US PlayStation Store the Standard Edition costs $59.99; the Ultimate Edition is 80% off at $19.99 until November 5, 2026 (regular price $99.99). Price comparison is on the RDR2 price page.

RDR2 on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One

Xbox Series X|S runs the Xbox One version. Series X uses the enhanced Xbox One X version — according to press reports, that means native 4K at 30 fps with HDR. Microsoft has not announced any dedicated optimization or FPS Boost for RDR2.

Game Pass. RDR2 is not in Xbox Game Pass right now. It was in the catalog from May 7, 2020 to September 7, 2020. The game's page on xbox.com offers launch through Xbox Cloud Gaming — check the access terms there.

On the US Xbox Store, RDR2 costs $59.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, the same as on Steam. You can also buy a disc at retail.

RDR2 on Switch 2: what we know

Official: there is no RDR2 version for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, and none has been announced. Only the first Red Dead Redemption came to Switch and Switch 2: to Switch on August 17, 2023, and to Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series on December 2, 2025, with a free upgrade.

Rumors:

  • Insider NateTheHate claimed in early 2026 that a next-gen RDR2 and a Switch 2 port would arrive "this year".
  • Insider Kiwi Talkz said the release will probably come after GTA 6.
  • Insider Tez2 wrote in 2024 that next-gen work had been paused.

The rumors contradict each other, and there has been no fresh confirmation in September–October 2026. One more source of confusion: in November 2025 the ESRB rated the first Red Dead Redemption for Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series, not RDR2 — and some outlets mistakenly reported it as the sequel. Bottom line: do not buy RDR2 "waiting for Switch 2" until Rockstar announces something.

RDR2 on PC and Steam Deck

PC has the best-looking version: higher resolution and frame rate than on consoles (depending on your hardware), plus NVIDIA DLSS support for RTX cards since July 13, 2021. The game is sold on Steam and the Rockstar Games Launcher; the Steam version still runs the Rockstar launcher. Only Windows is officially supported. Minimum requirements are Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 770 2 GB or Radeon R9 280; recommended are 12 GB and a GTX 1060 6 GB; you need 150 GB of storage. Details and settings tips are on the RDR2 system requirements page.

Steam Deck. Valve rates the game Playable: controls fully work and default performance is acceptable, but text is small, the Rockstar launcher sometimes gets in the way, and the first launch requires an internet connection.

Cloud services. Apart from Xbox Cloud Gaming, there are no official options. According to reviewers, RDR2 is currently not in the GeForce NOW catalog — check the current list in the NVIDIA app.

Which platform to pick for RDR2

If you have…Our advice
PS5Get the PS4 version or play it in PS Plus Extra until November 17, 2026. The 30 fps is stable and the game looks good
Xbox Series XBuy the Xbox One version: 4K/30 on Series X, the best picture among consoles
Xbox Series SRuns through backward compatibility like on Series X; no dedicated optimization
Gaming PCThe best option: higher resolution and frame rate, DLSS
Steam DeckPlayable, with trade-offs in graphics and battery life
Only a Switch 2 or a phoneRDR2 is not available. Look at the first Red Dead Redemption

If you plan to play Red Dead Online, keep in mind: on PlayStation online play needs PS Plus, on Xbox it needs Game Pass Core or Ultimate, and on PC no subscription is required. English voice acting is the original on every platform; subtitle languages are listed on the RDR2 languages page. Everything about the game is on the Red Dead Redemption 2 page.
