GTA Online beginner guide for 2026: how to spend the GTA$4 million from Career Builder, which missions pay without owning property, what to buy first, how to set up your session and stay off griefers' radar.
Where to start in GTA Online in 2026
This GTA Online beginner guide starts with a simple fact: in 13 years the game has piled up dozens of businesses and heists, but you only need three things at the start. Split your starting money wisely, collect the weekly bonuses every week, and play in sessions where nobody can bother you. Below is the order of play for your first 10–15 hours.
First, check which version you are launching. PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the GTA V Enhanced edition on PC have Career Builder and all the new graphics. The game still runs on PS4 and Xbox One, but those are separate servers; details are on the page where to play GTA Online. Prices for the game and subscriptions are in how much GTA Online costs.
Step 1. Career Builder: don't waste the GTA$4 million
After you create a character on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC Enhanced, the game offers Career Builder, a choice of criminal career. Rockstar describes it like this: you pick one of four paths and get GTA$4,000,000 for starting businesses, vehicles and weapons. Whatever you don't spend goes to your bank, capped at GTA$1,000,000. You can only go through Career Builder once.
| Path | Core business | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Executive (CEO) | CEO office and cargo warehouses | players who want VIP Work and, later, access to the Terrorbyte and the Oppressor Mk II |
| Gunrunner | Bunker (weapons manufacturing) | solo players: the Bunker runs on its own, the sale is a separate mission |
| Nightclub Owner | Nightclub | players planning many businesses: the club collects their goods |
| Biker | MC Clubhouse and biker businesses | players with friends; the Cocaine Lockup is the most profitable MC business |
Our pick for solo players is Gunrunner. The Bunker produces stock in the background, and a full, upgraded Bunker sells for GTA$1,050,000 in Los Santos according to guides (700K for the closer drop-off). Cheap locations are no worse than expensive ones: income depends on upgrades, not the address. Don't spend the remaining GTA$1 million on cars; you'll need it for your first business outside the path.
Step 2. First money without property
- The Cluckin’ Bell Farm Raid. Six missions in a row, no property needed. According to guides, the finale pays the host about GTA$400,000, or about 600,000 for the first run of the week.
- KnoWay Out. A story line from the A Safehouse in the Hills update. It starts from a payphone in Little Seoul and does not require a Mansion. The finale pays about 245K (Normal) or 367.5K (Hard).
- Weekly bonuses. Every Thursday Rockstar multiplies payouts for selected modes. Until November 4, 2026, Halloween Survivals, Slasher and the Community Race Series pay 3X GTA$ and RP.
- Daily Objectives. Three tasks a day. Guides list GTA$150,000 and 20,000 RP for a 7-day streak, and GTA$750,000 and 50,000 RP for 28 days.
- Classic heists with friends. High-End Apartments start at 200,000. The Fleeca Job also unlocks a discount on the Armored Kuruma (698,250 → 525,000), the most useful car for early missions.
The full ranking of money methods is in our guide how to make money in GTA Online.
Step 3. What to buy first: a plan for your first 5 million
| Budget | What to buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| up to 1M | Acid Lab equipment (750,000) after The First Dose missions | the cheapest business; a full batch sells for about 335K after the upgrade |
| 1–2M | High-End Apartment (from 200,000) + Kuruma (Armored) | classic heists and safer missions |
| 2–2.5M | Agency (from 2,010,000) or Kosatka (2,200,000) | the Dr. Dre Contract (≈900K) or the solo Cayo Perico Heist |
| after that | Bunker, Nightclub, Cocaine Lockup | passive income; the order is in our best solo businesses guide |
These are base prices without weekly discounts, according to GTA Boss and GTABase. Until November 4, 2026, the Agency is 40% off, from GTA$1,206,000. More: best solo businesses, Cayo Perico solo, and the full property table in GTA Online businesses.
What not to buy early: expensive supercars, yachts and Mansions (from 11.5M). A Mansion is only needed for The Kortz Center Heist, and it only pays off once your income is steady.
Step 4. Sessions and protection from griefers
Griefers are players who destroy other people's deliveries and cars for fun. Settings protect you better than quick reflexes:
- Private sessions. Since The Criminal Enterprises update (July 26, 2022), all business activities, including selling stock, work in Invite Only, Crew and Friends sessions. Pick the session in the pause menu: Online → Find New Session. The one downside: you don't get the "high demand" bonus for selling in a public session.
- Passive Mode. Turn it on in the Interaction Menu. Other players can't shoot you, but you can't attack anyone either.
- Don't carry stock into a public lobby. If a sale starts in a public session, everyone sees the cargo on the map.
- Armored vehicles. The Kuruma (Armored) protects you from NPC gunfire. Nothing protects you from Oppressor Mk II missiles, so it's better not to share a session with those players at all.
- GTA+ adds an off-the-radar mode and a police bribe, but it is a paid membership ($7.99 a month).
What beginners should avoid
Don't accept "gift" money from strangers and don't go looking for a money glitch. Rockstar removes illegitimately earned GTA$ and bans accounts for mod menus; on PC, BattlEye anti-cheat has been running since September 17, 2024. Players who take money from someone else's mod menu get penalized too. More on the page GTA Online cheats and codes. The official paid route is Shark Cards and GTA+; their prices are on GTA Online price.
Another common mistake is buying everything at once. Every business needs upgrades that often cost as much as the business itself, and production is slow without them. One upgraded Bunker beats three empty warehouses.
Rank: why it matters for beginners
Rank unlocks weapons, armor and some missions. It grows fastest in weekly 2X/3X RP modes, Daily Objectives and heist finales. The step-by-step plan is in our guide how to rank up fast in GTA Online. What's on in the game this week is on the weekly update page, and the general overview is in the GTA Online hub.
