GTA Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC Enhanced, PS4 and Xbox One: how the versions differ, what is happening with old-console support, how to transfer your character, whether there is crossplay and which PC version to pick, Legacy or Enhanced.
GTA Online on PS5, Xbox and PC: where to play in 2026
GTA Online on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC is the main version of the game in 2026: Rockstar's website lists GTA V as available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. These are the versions that get new vehicles and features with improved graphics, the Career Builder with a GTA$4 million start, and the GTA+ membership. The PS4 and Xbox One versions still work, but get fewer updates.
| Platform | Status in 2026 | GTA+ | Career Builder | What you need to play online |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | main version, all updates | yes | yes | PS Plus |
| Xbox Series X|S | main version, all updates | yes | yes | Game Pass Essential / Premium / Ultimate |

PS4 and Xbox One: what we know about support
There is no official announcement that GTA Online is shutting down on PS4 and Xbox One. The latest big update, The Kortz Center Heist (July 14, 2026), came out on all five platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. However, since July 30, 2026, entries in the TU 1.73 patch notes are tagged only "PS5 / Xbox Series X|S / PC", and the Rockstar Editor was removed from the old consoles even earlier. A May 2026 rumor that the summer update would be the last for PS4 and Xbox One has not been confirmed by Rockstar.
The practical takeaway: if you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S but your character is on PS4 or Xbox One, transfer it now while the upgrade is free. For PS3 and Xbox 360 it's over: the servers went offline on December 16, 2021, and Shark Cards stopped being sold there after September 15, 2021.
The free upgrade and character transfer
Since June 18, 2026, owners of any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of GTA V can move to PS5 / Xbox Series X|S for free and bring their GTA Online progress. Here is how it works:
- Install the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version and launch GTA Online.
- Sign in with the same Rockstar Games account your old character is linked to.
- The game will offer to transfer your profile; confirm it.
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| One-time | the transfer can't be undone or repeated; profiles are not merged |
| Your old character stays | since the 2023 changes, data on PS4 / Xbox One is not deleted, but progress does not sync between generations |
| Purchased GTA$ | only move within the family: PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S |
| Earned GTA$ | move regardless of platform |
| PC | progress does not transfer from PS4 / Xbox One to PC or the other way round |
These rules come from Rockstar Support and guides by GamesRadar and VGC. If you're starting fresh on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC Enhanced, the Career Builder gives you GTA$4 million to begin with; see the GTA Online beginner's guide.
Does GTA Online have crossplay
No. GTA Online has no crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and Rockstar has not said it is coming.
- PS4 and PS5. Players on the PS5 version only see other players on the PS5 version. To play with a friend on PS4, the PS5 owner has to launch the PS4 version of the game.
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: same thing, you only play together on the same version.
- PC is separate from consoles; on top of that, Legacy and Enhanced players don't end up in the same sessions.
- PS5 Pro runs the regular PS5 version; Rockstar has not announced a dedicated PS5 Pro enhancement for GTA V.
PC: Legacy or Enhanced
On March 4, 2025, GTA V Enhanced came out on PC as a free update for owners of the PC version; the old version was renamed Legacy. A purchase on Steam or Epic includes both.
| Enhanced | Legacy | |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics | ray tracing, DLSS 3, FSR, DirectStorage | 2015 version |
| Minimum requirements | GTX 1630 / RX 6400, 8 GB RAM, SSD required, 105 GB | GeForce 9800 GT, 4 GB RAM, 125 GB |
| GTA+ and Career Builder | yes | no |
| New vehicles and features | yes | some updates are Enhanced only |
| Progress transfer | possible from Legacy (one-time) | — |
The Legacy to Enhanced transfer is one-way. If your PC meets the Enhanced requirements, play that version. Both versions need the Rockstar Games Launcher or a Rockstar account; since September 2024 PC uses the BattlEye anti-cheat, which is why GTA Online doesn't run on Steam Deck. Full specs are on the GTA 5 system requirements page.
Mobile, Switch and GTA 6
There is no mobile version of GTA Online and no Nintendo Switch version. Cloud streaming is available on PS5 and PS Portal with PS Plus Premium; that is not a separate version, just a stream of the console game. Rockstar has said nothing about moving GTA Online characters into GTA 6: GTA 6 launches as a single-player game, details are in the GTA 6 section. Roleplay servers on PC are a separate world through FiveM; see GTA RP.
GTA Online platforms FAQ
Does GTA Online still work on PS4?
Yes. The Kortz Center Heist (July 2026) came out on PS4 too, and there is no official end of support. But since late July 2026, new patch note entries are tagged only for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Can PS4 and PS5 players play GTA Online together?
Only if the PS5 owner launches the PS4 version of the game. The PS5 version only connects you with other players on the PS5 version.
Is there crossplay between PS5 and Xbox in GTA Online?
No. PlayStation, Xbox and PC have separate servers.
How do I transfer my GTA Online character from PS4 to PS5?
Launch GTA Online on PS5 with the same Rockstar Games account and confirm the transfer. It's one-time only; since June 18, 2026, upgrading the game from PS4 to PS5 is free.
Does GTA Online work on Xbox 360 and PS3?
No, the servers were shut down on December 16, 2021. GTA V Story Mode still works on those consoles.
Which is better for GTA Online on PC, Legacy or Enhanced?
Enhanced: it has the new graphics, GTA+, the Career Builder and all new features. Legacy only makes sense for weak PCs without an SSD.
