The GTA 6 budget has never been disclosed: Take-Two only forecasts $8.0–8.2 billion in net bookings for the fiscal year the game launches in. Named analyst estimates, trailer records and GTA 5's records for comparison.
How much did GTA 6 cost: what we know about the budget
The GTA 6 budget has never been officially stated. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two publishes costs for individual games, and the company's reports do not break development spending down by project. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick declined to give a figure in an interview with Business Insider, saying only that the game "was expensive".
Every number you see online is an outside estimate:
- $1–1.5 billion for development: an estimate from anonymous industry analysts cited by Business Insider (and picked up by GamingBolt, GosuGamers and others). This is the most quoted figure.
- $2–3 billion: calculations by some outlets (TweakTown, MP1st) based on the public salary filings of Rockstar's UK studios for 2019–2025. Those documents are not split by game and do not cover every studio, so this is an extrapolation, not the game's budget.
For comparison, analysts put the GTA 5 budget at more than $265 million including marketing; that was never officially disclosed either.
If you see a headline saying "GTA 6 cost $2 billion" with no analyst named, it is not an official number.
What Take-Two officially says about sales
Take-Two is a public company, so its forecasts are an official source. One important detail: the company does not give a separate GTA 6 sales forecast in units; it reports overall figures for the fiscal year.
| What | Value | When |
|---|---|---|
| Net bookings forecast for fiscal 2027 (through 3/31/2027) | $8.0–8.2 billion, including the GTA 6 launch on November 19 | confirmed in the August 7, 2026 report |
| Net bookings for Q1 of fiscal 2027 | $1.39 billion | August 7, 2026 |
| Next report (Q2) | November 9, 2026 | per Take-Two's calendar |
| GTA 6 unit sales | not disclosed; first numbers are only possible after launch | — |
Net bookings are the total value of purchases customers made in a period, digital pre-orders included. The $8.0–8.2 billion forecast covers all Take-Two games (GTA Online, 2K and Zynga included), not just GTA 6.
Pre-orders: official word and estimates
GTA 6 pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026. Take-Two has not given exact numbers. Strauss Zelnick told the press pre-orders had "significantly" beaten the company's internal expectations.
Outside estimates:
- Sensor Tower: about 6.45 million digital pre-orders and about $630 million as of October 23, 2026, roughly 74% of them on PS5. According to RockstarINTEL, this sample covers only digital purchases in the US; other outlets describe it more broadly.
These are not Take-Two figures but models from analytics firms, and the numbers change every week. How to pre-order legitimately is on the how to get GTA 6 page.
How much will GTA 6 make: analyst forecasts
| Who | Forecast | Period |
|---|---|---|
| DFC Intelligence | about $3.2 billion in revenue, about 40 million copies | first year on sale |
| Newzoo | $3.25–5.2 billion | launch week |
Both forecasts are models from independent analysts, not Take-Two's position. Some of the estimates were made when launch was still planned for May 2026. Keep the price in mind too: GTA 6 costs $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Ultimate (see GTA 6 price), so in dollar terms it starts higher than GTA 5 did, and a direct revenue comparison with 2013 is misleading.
GTA 6 trailer records
| Trailer | Date | Result | Confirmed by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trailer 1 | December 5, 2023 (released on the evening of December 4 after a leak) | 90,421,491 YouTube views in 24 hours | Guinness World Records: most viewed video game reveal on YouTube in 24 hours |
| Trailer 1 | same | 59.4 million views, MrBeast's previous 24-hour record for a non-music video, passed in about 13 hours | press (Push Square, Kotaku) |
| Trailer 2 | May 6, 2025 | more than 475 million views across all platforms in 24 hours | Rockstar to The Hollywood Reporter: "the biggest video launch in history" |
| An Extended Look | August 27, 2026 | no official view count | — |
| Launch Trailer | October 15, 2026 | no official view count | — |
The numbers for the first and second trailers cannot be compared directly. The 90 million is YouTube only, while the 475 million adds up every platform (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and others). On YouTube alone, the second trailer did not beat the first. According to the press, the previous 24-hour all-platform record belonged to the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, with 365 million views. All videos are on the GTA 6 trailers page.
GTA 5 records GTA 6 has to beat
| GTA 5 record | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| First day | more than $800 million in retail sales | Take-Two, 9/18/2013 |
| $1 billion | in 3 days, faster than any entertainment product at the time | Take-Two, 9/20/2013 |
| Guinness World Records | 7, including best-selling video game in 24 hours (11.21 million copies) and highest-grossing entertainment product in 24 hours ($815.7 million) | Guinness World Records, October 2013 |
| Total sales | more than 230 million copies (sold-in) across three console generations | Take-Two report, 8/7/2026 |
| The whole GTA series | almost 475 million copies | same report |
"Sold-in" means copies shipped to stores or sold digitally, not necessarily bought by players. For reference, GTA 4 sold 3.6 million copies on its first day in 2008. More about the 2013 game is on the GTA 5 page, and the two games are compared in the GTA 6 vs GTA 5 guide.
When the first official numbers will appear
The next official event is Take-Two's fiscal Q2 report on November 9, 2026, before the game is out. Expect an updated forecast and comments on pre-orders. Take-Two usually shares first sales figures in press releases or in the following quarterly report, so for GTA 6 that means after the November 19 launch. We will update this page as soon as they appear. The countdown to launch is on the GTA 6 countdown page.
