What is officially known about the GTA 6 story: Jason and Lucia, a simple job gone wrong and a conspiracy across the state of Leonida. Plus where the "80 hours" figure comes from and why it is not the game's official length.
The official story description
Rockstar keeps the setup short: Jason and Lucia "have always known the deck is stacked against them". When a simple job goes wrong, they find themselves on the wrong side of the darkest conspiracy in the state of Leonida, and to survive they have to rely on each other.
The official bios add context. Jason grew up around grifters, settled in the Keys after the army and works for drug runners. Lucia did time in Leonida Penitentiary for a fight in which she was defending her family; for her, a life with Jason is a way out. More on the GTA 6 characters page.
Tone and satire
Like the earlier games, GTA 6 pokes fun at modern America: social media, influencers, a culture of excess. The game has its own social network, Snapmatic, with a feed of celebrities and people the heroes know. According to Rockstar's Rupert Humphries in a conversation with The New York Times, the satire will not directly feature the COVID pandemic or Donald Trump.
How long the GTA 6 story is
Rockstar has not given an official length. The "80 hours" figure picked up by headlines comes from Rockstar North's Rob Nelson speaking to The New York Times: that is how long his own playthrough took, the main story plus some optional goals that affect the narrative. So treat it as a rough guide, not a spec: some players will finish faster, others much later.
For comparison, players usually finish the main story of GTA 5 in 30 to 35 hours and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 50 or more.
